On April 11th, Brooklyn Center police shot and murdered a 20 year old Black man named Daunte Wright during a traffic stop after pulling him over for the so-called “crime” of having an air freshener hanging from his rearview mirror. The city of Brooklyn Center is just north of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Derek Chauvin is currently on trial for the murder of George Floyd. This is also the same police department that a little over a year ago murdered Kobe Heisler, for which to date no killer cop has been charged.

The night of the 11th, over a hundred people gathered outside of the Brooklyn Center police station to protest this racist murder. They were met with the full brutal force of the BCPD, armed with riot gear, flash-bangs, rubber bullets and tear gas. They fired many of these “non-lethal” weapons directly at protesters. They also fired tear gas at onlookers on the balconies of their apartments just across the street. Eventually, the MN state patrol, National Guard, and University of Minnesota Police Department were sent up to assist in their brutality against protesters. Alongside the many police forces were the organizations that had been hired by the city of Minneapolis to harass protesters and back the city’s narrative. The cities of Brooklyn Center, Minneapolis and Saint Paul have since called a curfew to once again repress people who are fighting back against an oppressive and exploitative system.

As mentioned, this all took place during the ongoing trial of killer cop Derek Chauvin who, with his 3 accomplices, murdered George Floyd in May of last year. Even during this trial these racist cops continue to murder more people, and continue to brutally repress protesters for demanding justice. Politicians in MN have been quick to share their condolences, all while authorizing brutality against protesters. These same politicians have done nothing to hold killer cops accountable for decades. It’s clear that the power to hold the police accountable needs to be in the hands of the people, not these politicians. We stand with the demand raised for community control of the police!

Students for a Democratic Society stands in solidarity with the people and organizers on the ground. Our chapter at the University of Minnesota has called for a protest of the UMPD’s deployment to attack protesters demanding justice for Daunte Wright, and to demand a campus CPAC so the UMPD can’t be sent out to help brutalize protesters. We stand in solidarity with the Twin Cities Coalition for Justice 4 Jamar, and all of the coalition members it works alongside who have called protests demanding justice for Daunte Wright.

SDS is calling for a National Day of Action on April 19th, which is projected to be the day of closing arguments in the Derek Chauvin trial. We demand justice for George Floyd, Daunte Wright, and all stolen lives! Convict Chauvin and his accomplices. Jail the killer cops that murdered George Floyd and Daunte Wright. We demand community control of the police in the form of a Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC) in every city!
