On March 29th, 2021, officers of the Chicago Police Department shot and killed 13-year-old Adam Toledo. Following his murder, the officers responsible for his death falsely claimed that Adam Toledo was armed with a handgun while he was fleeing the police. National SDS condemns the Chicago Police Department’s murder of a child, and demands justice for Adam Toledo!

Less than two weeks after the police killing of Adam Toledo, Tallahassee Police shot and killed Raheem Reeder on April 8th, 2021. The police killings of Adam Toledo and Raheem Reeder were followed by another fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright, on April 11th, 2021 in Brooklyn Center Minnesota. Even during the trial of killer cop Derek Chauvin, the police all over the country feel emboldened to continue to terrorize and murder people. People are demanding justice for stolen lives, police accountability, and the end to police murders, despite repression from the state.

State and local governments are failing to hold the police accountable and are enabling police departments’ violence against our communities. Rather than taking measures to end police shootings and murders, state and local governments are deploying the police and national guard en masse to repress the people’s movements demanding police accountability, justice for those killed by police, and an end to racialized police violence. This has become apparent in Brooklyn Center, MN and the nearby Twin Cities, as the Minnesota National Guard occupies these communities and works alongside the police to stop community protests and arrest people in attendance.

National SDS reaffirms our call for a National Day of Action against police murders on April 19th, to coincide with closing arguments in the trial of killer cop Derek Chauvin. We demand justice for Adam Toledo, Raheem Reeder and all stolen lives! We demand community control of the police, and convictions of killer cops!
