On 22 September, 2021, Florida state Representative Webster Barnaby proposed a law following the atrocious Texas abortion law. This law would ban abortions in Florida when a heartbeat is detected in a fetus, around 6 to 8 weeks in a term.

A heartbeat is usually detected before most people know that they are even pregnant, making this an incredibly strict and unjust law and attack on women’s and reproductive rights. Florida following suit after the Texas law is a direct attack on bodily autonomy and healthcare rights. It shows the dangerous precedent that states can set, but SDS will and is standing against this at every step.

Students for a Democratic Society stands against any and all attacks on reproductive rights, and demands that Florida revoke this proposed bill and protect the right for people to choose. We stand with Planned Parenthood, Women’s March, and all groups that have been at the forefront of this fight. We call on SDS chapters, especially those in Florida, to rally against this bill on our national day of action November 9 and stand up for women’s and reproductive rights!

Abortion is a human right!
My body, my choice!
Defend women’s rights!
Defend reproductive rights!
