On 2 September 2021, the Supreme court denied a request to freeze a Texas state law that bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. This law is one of the strictest in the nation and essentially bans all abortions since a fetal heartbeat can be detected before most women know they are pregnant. Texas SDS chapters have already mobilized alongside many other organizations to protest this unconstitutional bill.

This bill is an attack against women, bodily autonomy, and basic healthcare rights. Forced pregnancies take an incredible mental, emotional, and physical toll and particularly affects working class and African American women - who have high maternal mortality rates. This decision by the Supreme Court is clearly an attempt to undermine, and eventually overturn, Roe v. Wade. Other states, such as Florida, are already considering enacting similar bills.

Students for a Democratic Society calls on all those in Texas to fight back against this bill and defend Roe v. Wade. We demand that the federal government stop this attack on women’s rights by declaring this bill unconstitutional. We also call upon other states to fight against similar bills that may appear in the future.
