After almost a year of fighting for justice for George Floyd, SDS celebrates the conviction of Derek Chauvin, but also knows that the fight is not over. Chauvin is facing a maximum of 10 years for second-degree manslaughter, 25 years for third-degree murder, and 40 years for second-degree murder. However, it has been recommended that Chauvin receive a total sentence of just 12.5 years for the brutal murder of George Floyd.

SDS stands against this inadequate sentencing for Chauvin, and demands that he face the maximum sentencing for all charges. Killer cops should not face light sentences because they are cops; they should be held accountable for their actions. Derek Chauvin needs to be held accountable to the fullest degree due to his killing of George Floyd.

On May 25th, a year after the murder of George Floyd, SDS is calling for a national day of action to demand that Chauvin receives maximum sentencing. Additionally, we are calling for the arrest and conviction of the three other killer cops involved: J. Alexander Keung, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao. We want full justice for George Floyd, not just partial justice.
