March 29th is the beginning of opening statements and testimonies for Derek Chauvin’s trial. Derek Chauvin is the first of the four killer cops on trial for the brutal murder of George Floyd. As the trial continues, Students for a Democratic Society demands justice for George Floyd and accountability towards Derek Chauvin and his crimes.

Additionally, SDS stands against the court’s attempts to create an unfair jury in an attempt to prevent Derek Chauvin from being held accountable for his crimes. At least 3 non-white jurors were struck from the process, including a potential Black juror that stated his experience with Minneapolis Police Department playing “Another One Bites the Dust” around his neighborhood when MPD murdered a Black man.

Over the summer, millions took to the streets demanding justice for George Floyd, many taking part in solidarity actions held by SDS and NAARPR. As the trial carries on we will continue to put pressure on the government to convict Derek Chauvin and lock him away for good. With the opening statements, we are calling for SDS chapters and anyone else who is able to have actions in solidarity with those in Minneapolis and to demand justice for George Floyd!

This isn’t the end either! We will continue to call for solidarity actions across the country for as long as we need to, until Chauvin is convicted. We will continue to closely watch the trial, and take part in solidarity actions called by the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR) and their Minneapolis affiliate,Twin Cities Coalition for Justice 4 Jamar (TCC4J)

Our specific demands: Charge and convict Derek Chauvin for the brutal murder of George Floyd Community control of the police in the form of a Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC) in every city Convict the three other cops complicit in the murder of George Floyd: J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao Justice for all other victims of police brutality and murder
